First, just found your blog, love it. Sig...Laura,

First, just found your blog, love it. Signed up to follow. Second, I've been in the emergency room with my hubby on three (or is it four) ocassions now with Kindey stones. It truely does give one time to pause and think (at least between keeping my eight year old from playing with all the medical gadgets - doctors kind of frown upon that.)

And lastly but most importantly, hope you husband is doing better. Can't wait to read more.Jamiehttp://www.justanallamericangirl.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4114789681546241498.post-18882736019960254652010-02-16T18:41:49.186-05:002010-02-16T18:41:49.186-05:00LAURA! First, sorry about your husband's kidn...Laura,

First, sorry about your husband's kidney challenges. No fun at all.

Second, another one of those pithy, provocative posts that proves we're cosmically related. I, too, have pondered the specter of death a lot since my fateful barefoot encounter with that poisonous snake last summer. Even though the worst it might've come to was losing said foot, I had a coupe of hours where no one would tell me anything, and needless to say, the time between the camp and the hospital was spent in a fearless moral inventory of my life.

I had the great fortune of spending a couple of years teaching acting and improv comedy to some of Shepard Spinal Center's patients. They formed a comedy troupe and when a friend who was their instructor had to bow out, she asked me to step in. It's a humbling experience, standing on your own two runner's feet in front of people who struggle every day with physical challenges we can't fathom. I was humbled, to be sure.

I just got home from a site check. My comedy troupe is doing a gratis show for Camp Sunshine, a place that is a home away from home for kids with cancer. I am preparing myself now for the next round of humility, grief, and gratitude.

Life gives us these sporadic opportunities to embrace that dark night of the soul and - if we dare - give it a gentle hug so it seems less daunting.

I salute you for doing so. Onward, up that hill. Godspeed. Lace up those running shoes.Tommy Housworthhttp://tommyhousworth.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.com
